Life's Ceremonies for Pets
When our beloved 12 year-old Golden Lab. Sara, came to the end of her life, I was in my second year of seminary. As a natural part of our healing process it seemed fitting that we have a ceremony upon receiving Sara's cremains. That ceremony was, for me, the beginning of a very special ministry devoted to the spiritual and emotional healing of families who are grieving the loss of an animal friend.
Those of us touched by the pure unconditional love of an animal are never the same.
Healing is not about the passage of time....
Healing comes with reverent attention to a life well lived, acknowledgement that every life has a physical ending called death, and acceptance that there is a place in our hearts where the loving bond never ends and a place in our minds where memories of joy and gratefulness eventually bring peace.
Though we know at the onset that we will probably outlive them, nothing can prepare us for the time when we are asked to return them to their Creator.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Performed soon after their passing the COL is intended to highlight the happiness, memories, and perhaps achievements of the animal. It is a joyful gathering of family and friends and usually includes a eulogy. Cremains(ashes) may be ceremonially placed, scattered or blessed at this time.
MEMORIAL
Can be done annually or at anytime to commemorate your pet's date of birth or death. A memorial is usually a more personal event to honor your friend. It is sometimes done at the time of euthanasia and is a sacred gathering which allows for support during the sharing of tears and grief.
EULOGY
A historical recounting of your pet's entire life - the story of his or her heritage or birth or journey to you, accomplishments, personality and special times.
